It is that time people, the time of year we look forward to in some ways and loathe in many many other ways. It’s the holiDAZE! I want to give you just a few of my humble experience on how to not only survive, but rather THRIVE.

In my huge Italian family (my mom is one of 12 kids!), it was usually mayhem and flat out weirdness. Snapshot…I have one uncle that is 72 with a 35 year old girlfriend who happens to be my brother’s, who is mentally challenged, nurse, which of course pisses my mom off.  A few of my other uncles are recovering addicts but have some personality issues happening.  A few others haven’t quite hit the recovery stage yet. My mafia (yep) uncle (not blood related, but married to my mom’s sister) always fuels family drama over family money when he shows up. The millions (it feels like) of cousins are running around haphazardly, half of which I don’t know. One year we even had illegitimate cousins that found my uncle over the Internet show up, much to my Aunt’s (his wife) dismay.  And me, mid/late thirties, single, no kids, which is, practically blasphemy to my East Coast Italian roots. Yes, this is my amazing, dynamic, family whom I absolutely (now) adore.

The holidays are not about gifts and over indulgence, but rather are meant to be a time to connect and celebrate with family and friends many of whom we don’t get to see very often. While it has taken some time, instead of loathing the whole experience, I decided to set myself up for success.

After much practice, I learned how to ROCK the holidays and here are 7 tips to help you navigate this holiday season.

I just finished the book, “Sex at Dawn”. Easily, in my opinion, of the most influential and socially-inquisitive anthropological works of our time. It’s a study of the evolution of human sexuality from pre-history to today that states we as a species have un-necessarily and quite falsely placed ourselves in a box of universal monogamy as the key to successful relationship. I know what you’re thinking...another book about polyamory. Another hippie-dippy summer of love symposium of an experiment we all know went array a long time ago. As a fellow cynic I assure you, it’s worth the read...if nothing else then for the jarring question; are we living in a rigid, socially constructed idea of relationship that just may be creating the dis-ease? Are we holding so tightly to our history that we can’t possibly make room for the present? Are we living in fear and shame behind the scenes (monumental divorce rates, adulteries, and broken families) only to plaster a smile on our faces and laugh together during “Desperate Housewives”?

Strength when the Tide Rises: The OM Collection during the Colorado Flood

The American spirit was tested again this September 11thThe national news was commemorating the twin towers attack and giving thanks to the heroic fire fighters that risked their lives in 2001. Meanwhile, Colorado citizens were beginning to confront their own impending disaster. The skies opened up and a heavy rain began to fall.  Colorado would not see its famous blue skies for over a week.

The rivers and creeks rose quickly, and citizens took to the street in awe of the water's power. Facebook was inundated with images of creeks pummeling over pedestrian bridges and updates of road closures and businesses shutting their doors. At first it seemed like a novelty; college students were tubing down bike paths that were now rivers and people were enjoying an unexpected holiday. As the days of rain mounted and basements began to fill, it became clear how vulnerable modernity is in the face of Mother Nature...

This renewal leads to a few exciting announcements from The OM Collection team. Read more on our upcoming Flood Sale,  launch of a new yoga lifestyle clothing product line and our active apparel whole sale line.
